The holiday season is a time of warmth, wonder, and festive gatherings. Whether it’s the vibrant glow of holiday lighting or the dynamic visual impact of LED walls, using the right technology can leave lasting impressions. Discover how you can leverage creative lighting and LED solutions to inspire your holiday events with versatile and innovative AV applications.
Lighting: Setting the Scene
Lighting transforms holiday events into memorable experiences, creating ambiance and reinforcing themes. From subtle uplighting to dynamic effects, the possibilities are endless with the right tools and techniques.
Add Dimension with Gobos
Gobos allow for creative projections that can bring a festive touch to any space. Snowflake patterns, twinkling stars or abstract designs can be layered to add stunning effects. This layering capability adds depth and motion, transforming static images into dynamic displays that captivate audiences. Fixtures like the Best Boy LED, which features an advanced optical system, are a great choice for a variety of gobos.
Incorporate Atmospheric Effects
Atmospheric effects like haze or fog enhance the overall impact of lighting designs. A light haze can define beams of light, creating a magical, immersive feel. Similarly, fog machines add depth and atmosphere, softening the surroundings and emphasizing lighting effects. These tools are versatile and easy to integrate, making them a great choice for holiday events.
Enhance Ambiance with Uplighting
Uplighting is an effective way to add vibrant color and focus to a holiday setting. The versatility and ease of deployment makes uplighting particularly appealing for event planners looking to achieve striking effects while staying within budget. Fixtures such as the Color Kinetics ColorBlast 12 and the Elation Fuse Par Z175 are excellent choices for illuminating walls, trees or architectural details.
Create Nostalgia with Incandescent Lights
For a cozy, traditional holiday ambiance, incandescent lighting remains a favorite. The warm glow of these fixtures evokes nostalgia and provides a comforting contrast to modern LED displays. They are especially effective in settings that emphasize holiday traditions or classic aesthetics. The ETC Source 4, for one, is a great option for incandescent holiday lighting. While not technically an incandescent light, the PRG 5L offers a similar warm and nostalgic effect, as it is an LED retrofit of the original VL5 incandescent fixture.
With a mix of thoughtful design and reliable fixtures, lighting becomes a centerpiece for holiday creativity, capable of transforming any venue into a celebration of warmth and wonder.
LED Walls: Creative Displays Beyond the Ordinary
LED walls elevate holiday events by offering endless creative possibilities. Unlike traditional monitors or projection systems, LED panels excel in high ambient light settings and customization, providing unmatched brightness and versatility.
Create Custom Shapes Using Square Panels
LED tiles can be configured into various shapes and layouts to achieve one-of-a-kind designs. Standard square panels, paired with custom masking, can mimic circular or semi-circular displays, providing a sophisticated look without requiring custom components. For example, a circular LED floor can be created by combining square tiles with a masked border, delivering a polished aesthetic while staying cost-effective.
Transform Holiday Ambience with Dynamic Content
The content displayed on LED walls can enhance the festive mood, from digital signage to dynamic video loops or slideshows. High-resolution LED panels allow for vibrant and immersive visuals, showcasing snow-covered landscapes, animated holiday greetings or elegant abstract patterns. These displays not only engage audiences but also reinforce the theme and tone of the event.
Incorporate Custom LED Products for Unique Designs
Custom LED solutions add a distinctive flair to holiday events. Products like the PixelDrop PD30, a string of cylindrical LEDs, or the Revolution Blade, an LED strip which offers flexible design possibilities, are ideal for creating eye-catching installations. Transparent LED panels, like the Titan X8, add another layer of creativity by enabling seamless integration with audio systems while maintaining visual impact. These tools allow planners to move beyond traditional displays, incorporating interactive or sculptural elements that resonate with attendees and leave a lasting impression.

How to Choose the Perfect LED Wall for Your Event
Planning an event and aiming for a visual spectacle? An LED wall, also known as a video wall or LED screen, might be your best bet. But with so many options available, how do you make the best choice for your event? This guide will walk you through the key factors to consider.
Understanding the Different Types of LED Walls
LED walls are made up of multiple LED tiles, also referred to as LED panels, and there are different types available. The first step is to determine whether you need an indoor or outdoor LED wall.
Environment: Indoor vs. Outdoor LED Walls
Indoor LED walls are designed for controlled environments like conference rooms, exhibition halls and indoor music venues. They provide high-resolution displays with vibrant colors, perfect for performances, presentations or events.
Outdoor LED walls (IP65+), however, are built to withstand harsh weather conditions and offer excellent visibility even in bright sunlight. They are often used for outdoor concerts, sporting events, or large-scale advertising. These LED walls are typically larger and have higher brightness levels to ensure clear visibility from a distance.
Pixel Pitch & Brightness
Another important consideration is the pixel pitch, which refers to the distance between each LED pixel on the display. A smaller pixel pitch means higher pixel density and thus resolution, resulting in sharper images and better video quality. Here is a rough breakdown of pixel pitch:
Low pixel pitch: 1 – 3 mm (e.g. INFiLED DB 2.3)
Medium pixel pitch: 3 – 5 mm (e.g. Roe Black Onyx BO3)
High pixel pitch: 5+ mm (e.g. INFiLED Titan X8)
Brightness and viewing distance are also essential factors. Brightness, measured in NITS, determines how well the LED wall can be seen in different lighting conditions. For outdoor events, high brightness is crucial to combat direct sunlight. Viewing distance refers to how far the audience can be from the LED wall without losing clarity. It’s important to choose an LED wall with an appropriate viewing distance based on the venue size and audience. Rule of thumb for viewing distance is 1m of viewing distance for each “mm” of pitch [e.g. – 2.3mm requires 2.3m of viewing distance]. This is the distance needed to get a good “blending” of the LEDs and reduce “pixelation”.
Accounting for Moiré
Will this video wall be recorded, whether professionally or by attendees on their phone? If so, make sure to account for moiré. The moiré effect is a visual distortion on LED screens that occurs when overlapping patterns create unusual stripes on display images or videos.
When accounting for moiré, consider the scan rate of the LED tiles. The scan rate of an LED tile affects moiré by determining how the image is refreshed. A lower scan rate increases the chance of moiré patterns, while a higher scan rate reduces this risk by better aligning with the camera’s capture rate and minimizing distortions.
Curving & Transparency
Certain LED tiles and panels offer creative options such as curving and transparency. Curved LED walls not only look remarkable, but can also improve viewing angles, allowing your attendees to have better visibility of the content. Transparent LED panels can provide a big creative moment with performers, products or video content behind them. They can also be used to let more sound through if your audio set up is behind the wall.
Determining the Ideal LED Screen Size
The size of your event and the venue will significantly impact your choice of LED video wall. These factors are crucial in determining the ideal screen size, adapting the LED walls to different event spaces, and considering audience size and viewing angles.
Determining the ideal LED screen size ensures the content is visible and impactful for all attendees. For example, at a large concert where attendees are distanced from the stage, you’ll need a larger LED wall and more panels, but you won’t need such a fine pixel pitch. Whereas if you’re hosting a brand activation where attendees are up close to the content, you will use a smaller wall with a high pixel pitch to ensure high quality graphics.
Considering Audience Size and Viewing Angles
If you expect a large audience, choose an LED video wall with high pixel pitch and brightness to ensure visibility from a distance. Additionally, consider viewing angles to prevent distortion or loss of quality when viewed from different positions in the venue.
Take the Las Vegas Sphere, for example – the interior LED panels and tiles create stunning visuals that appear high quality to the audience, but did you know that the pixel pitch is as large as 9mm? This works because the audience is at a reasonable distance from the screens. Not so close that they can see the pixelation, but not so far that it’s difficult to see at all.

Adapting to Different Event Spaces
Some venues have unique layouts or architectural features that can affect LED video wall placement and installation. Use this to your advantage and get creative with it by utilizing curved or transparent LED screens, for example. Assessing the event space beforehand and working with professionals to provide customized solutions can go a long way.
Setting Up an LED Wall
Setting up an LED wall can be complex, but with proper knowledge and planning, it can be seamless. Consider transportation and setup, required personnel, and the necessary skill level and experience. Ensure you have the appropriate vehicles and equipment to transport the LED wall to the venue. Allocate enough time for setup, which may involve careful positioning, connecting cables, and testing.
Depending on the size and complexity of the LED wall, you may need a team of skilled personnel, including technicians, electricians and riggers familiar with LED wall installation. Ensure you have a qualified team on board.
Brief Overview of Setting Up an LED Wall
Transportation: Ensure you have the right vehicles and equipment for safe transport. If you’re renting, you typically won’t have to worry about this step, as your rental provider will account for transportation.
Initial Setup: Position the LED wall and set up mounting or rigging connections. Use sandbags or weights where necessary, depending on how large your wall is.
Cables: Connect the necessary cables in a clean and organized manner to streamline the load-out and ensure that issues with individual tiles can easily be addressed.
Final Adjustments: Align the LED panels and test the display for optimal performance.
The required skill level and experience depend on the specific product and the scale of your wall. Some LED walls require advanced technical knowledge, while others are more user-friendly. A small 5×5 LED wall may be doable in-house, whereas a large 20×20 wall may require additional support. Assess your team’s skill level and match it with the LED wall requirements. If you need additional support setting up your LED wall, PRG Gear can provide experienced technicians to make certain it’s safely and properly installed.

It is vitally important to adhere to safe rigging practices and ensure that every setup is thoroughly planned and executed. As part of our focus on emphasizing rigging safety, PRG Gear is pleased to provide this overview of the components that contribute to a safe rigging setup.
Rigging safety begins with a thorough understanding of industry safety standards, which are designed to protect everyone involved in the production, from the crew setting up the rigging to the audience enjoying the event. It’s crucial to stay updated on these standards and ensure that all equipment and practices meet or exceed them. Implementing robust safety protocols and regular inspections prevents accidents and ensures the well-being of all participants.
Training and Certifications
Rigging professionals should pursue comprehensive training and certifications to stay current with industry best practices. Certifications from organizations such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are essential. Additionally, programs from the Event Safety Alliance (ESA) and the Entertainment Services and Technology Association (ESTA) offer valuable resources and training, providing latest knowledge and skills to perform their jobs safely.
Best Practices for Rigging Safety
Plots and Drawings
Detailed drawings, whether on CAD or Vectorworks, are essential for planning and visualizing the rigging setup. They identify potential issues and ensure that the design adheres to safety standards. Drawings will lay out evacuation pathways and emergency procedures, adding an additional layer of safety. They also facilitate clear communication among the rigging team and other stakeholders.

Wet Stamp Approval
Obtaining wet stamp approval from a reputable engineering firm, such as Clark Reder, is vital. Approval verifies that the rigging plot is safe, considering factors like weather conditions, load capacity and structural integrity. This isn’t always a necessary step: For example, you may not need it in a convention center where the rigging is already tested and approved. However, for most outdoor or custom setups, it certainly is.
Safety Equipment
When on-site, it’s crucial to have your rigging staff equipped with proper safety equipment, starting with a harness. Like a harness you would wear when rock climbing, a full body rigging harness allows riggers to be protected from a fall when working at heights. A harness has multiple positioning and safety anchors that can be used to link a rigger to a stationary object, such as a truss or fall-arrest system, preventing a fall in case a grip loosens.
Other accessories and safety gear to consider include lifeline solutions, climbing helmets, carabiners, positioning hardware, and lanyards. PRG Gear offers a range of protection and accessories specifically designed for rigging safety.
Equipment Maintenance, QC and Upgrades
Regularly assess and upgrade your rigging equipment to maintain adherence to safety standards. A recent incident highlighted the importance of this change. We had a report of a hoist fly cable with a spinning barrel end connection. Upon powering up the system, electricity was inadvertently sent up the control side of the cable. This allowed power to travel through the hoist, ultimately arcing to the steel. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but this incident underscored the need for an upgrade, and we promptly converted to the C7-38 pinout. This upgrade ensures a continuous ground connection even if the connector misaligns internally, thus providing enhanced protection for end users.
Quality control is essential for rigging gear. If you’re renting from a reputable provider like PRG Gear, you can be confident that each piece of rigging equipment undergoes rigorous QC both before and after each project.
Onsite Organization and Preparation
Effective onsite organization is key to a smooth rigging process. Techniques such as color-coding cases and products streamline deployment and reduce the risk of errors. Proper preparation ensures that the setup is both efficient and safe.
Community and Collaboration
Engaging with the rigging community can provide valuable support and insights. Online platforms, like Facebook groups for rigging professionals, offer a space to share experiences, ask questions and stay updated on industry trends.
Beyond online groups, consider attending rigging events to further expand your network. Attending a meetup such as the Event Safety Summit is a great way to meet like-minded people and expand your rigging knowledge.

Ready to Rig?
Safety is the cornerstone of any successful rigging project. By adhering to industry standards, upgrading equipment, maintaining thoughtful organization, and investing in training and community engagement, event professionals can ensure that their setups are secure and reliable.
PRG Gear provides all the services mentioned above. With a team of seasoned rigging experts, we can provide the drawings, obtain wet stamps for approval and even assist with on-site management and setup.

PRG Gear recently provided gear for a multi-day conference in Nashville, utilizing L-Acoustics audio. Our extensive range of AV equipment—including audio, video, projection, lighting, and LED—ensured the event was a stunning success. In addition to the gear provided, PRG’s Jason Brace was on-site as a systems engineer, to help with the complexities of the L-Acoustics sound system used throughout the event.
The event consisted of three rooms hosting panels and talks with one large general session. Jason helped with audio in all rooms, primarily focusing on the general session.

L-Acoustics 十大澳门信誉网赌排名 Setup for General Session
The front of house setup consisted of two smaller L-Acoustics X8s, two hanging stacks of Kara IIs, LA7.16is, LA8 amps and six KS21 subwoofers. A few L2s and L2Ds provided long-throw for the majority of the seating and 108p speakers were used as delay units to ensure the audio could reach the back of the ballroom. Everything was run on a Yamaha CL5 console and MacBooks with QLab were used for triggering intros, walk-ons, and pre-show announcements.
Due to the reflective ballroom carpet, the team adjusted the room setup to accommodate the sound system. Jason performed an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) analysis via L-Acoustics predictive software called Soundvision. This process ensured that the audio levels and frequency were in-tune and in sync for the performance.
They achieved quality audio throw, reaching up to 120 feet with lavalier microphones – Shure WL 184 cardioid lavaliers with Shure Axient digital AD1 transmitters. This setup epitomizes the signature L-Acoustics audio.

Lighting, Video, Projection & More
The event featured standard AV gear, focusing on solid, reliable equipment rather than high-end setups. For lighting, there were a variety of LED Lekos. Video setup included 20K laser projectors with 11 by 20 screens and newer Panasonic switchers.
Having Jason Brace on-site was invaluable for the L-Acoustics setup. As this is a relatively new system, Jason’s extensive audio experience and L-Acoustics certification ensured flawless audio throughout the event.

In the ever-evolving world of production, staying ahead of the curve is not just a choice – it’s a necessity. We recently sat down with Laurence Nunn, associate ASC member and National Product Manager for Camera at PRG, to discuss the current state of production cameras and how they compare to their dated counterparts. From vast improvements in image quality and sensor technology to faster connectivity and better user experience, there are many reasons to upgrade – and the results speak for themselves.
Are decade old cameras still viable? How has camera technology changed in the last decade?
We still see the Sony HXC-100 being regularly rented for events, and while familiar and affordable, it’s limited to HD resolution. When you look at the Panasonic UC4000, it boasts 4K capabilities, providing four times the image quality, crisper details and stunning clarity. This leap in resolution is coupled with advancements in color depth and high dynamic range (HDR). This means richer colors, deeper blacks, and a level of realism that was previously unattainable. I liken the transition to upgrading from an 8-pack of crayons to a 64-pack – familiar yet transformative.

Why should someone make the switch and upgrade if the cameras they’re currently using seem to work just fine?
With the HXC-100 recently discontinued by Sony it’s becoming more and more difficult to service and repair when issues arise. As support for older cameras starts to dwindle, they become more of a liability on set, where there is little room for error. Combine this with the vast improvements in workflow, image quality and sensor technology, and it becomes clear that contemporary cameras are better suited for production. While the Sony HXC-100 has its merits, the Panasonic UC4000 presents an opportunity to leap into the future of production. The UC4000’s 4K capabilities, modern sensor technology and comprehensive connectivity lay the foundation for a new era of content creation.
What areas of production is the Panasonic UC4000 best for?
The UC4000 caters to a vast range of applications – sports broadcasting, concert IMAG, studio production, live events and more. Its compatibility with other industry-standard workflows and its capacity for accurate color matching across multiple camera types make it a powerhouse in content creation.
What are some other modern alternatives you recommend?
In addition to the Panasonic UC4000, there are a variety of alternatives to the HXC-100. These alternatives are all fantastic options for someone looking to upgrade to a more contemporary camera. Here are a few of my top picks:
Sony HDC-4300 4kHD
|
Sony HDC-2500 HD Color CameraLightweight with newly developed CCD sensor and more functions than its predecessor.
|
Sony HDC-3500 CameraThe world’s first 2/3” 4k CMOS sensor with global shutter technology. Seamless integration allows for better workflow. |
Grass Valley LDX 135 CameraAt a lower entry price, the LDX 135 stretches production resources farther with familiar features from past models. |
What do these shifts in camera technology mean for production teams today?
In today’s landscape of production cameras, the Panasonic UC4000 stands as the bridge between legacy and innovation. The time has come to transcend the limitations of the past and embrace the future of production. The UC4000 and the alternatives mentioned are your key to unlocking a new realm of visual storytelling, where image quality, connectivity and usability converge to create something truly remarkable.

Our LED team is hitting the road! We’re excited to kick off an LED Roadshow that will showcase our recent purchase of 8,000 panels of InfiLED DB Series high-resolution LED, including Brompton Processing and the ATG Loc-N-Load Ground Support System.
“Technical advances in LED and stability in the sub-3mm resolution market have allowed us to respond to client demand, and we are confident that these products will be very popular with our Gear clients. Coming on the heels of our recent lighting fixture purchases, PRG’s significant investment in this state-of-the-art technology reinforces our position as a premium provider in the markets we serve.”
– Todd Spencer, Vice President, PRG Gear
The roadshow will have multiple stops across the nation for a two-day event at each location. Day 1 is an Open House for you to stop by to meet our team and see the new technology in action. Day 2 is dedicated for those looking for in-depth, technical hands-on training.
